Since it seems to be a fear for a large number of people, I want to give a couple tips on public speaking.

  • Never start with “Good Morning. Today we are going to talk about…” You have just labeled yourself in the same category as every other boring speech they have heard.
  • Open with a story or something the audience can connect with. Make it relevant and interesting.
  • Don’t be afraid to make the stories a little longer. This is especially true for boring content or for an audience who isn’t as knowledgeble as you on the topic. If they are struggling to grasp the content, then the story is what they will remember and the parallels you drew from it.
  • Be flexible. Be able to shorten or lengthen your talk, without compromising the main points. Organize in a way that you are able to skip sections that aren’t critical and the flow isn’t interrupted.
  • Practice your pitch, inflection and timing. Words and sentences can be much better if delivered right. Especially practice this for your main points and punchlines.
  • If you aren’t funny, don’t try. People are funny in different ways. You can be funny in a one on one situation but not with an audience. Some people are situationally funny but not when speaking. Be honest with yourself about how funny you really are. If you require another’s interaction to be funny, then get the audience involved.
  • If you allow questions at the end, be polite. Don’t point out a dumb question, but just answer and move on. If you don’t know the answer to a question, do not make something up. If someone in the audience does know and you guessed wrong, then you have lost all credibility with them.
